Landlord's voyeurism vs cheap rent: agony aunt's verdict

A tenant is torn between reporting his voyeuristic landlord and keeping his cheap rent, but agony aunt Jane O'Gorman says no discount is worth such intrusion.

The man, writing to the Daily Star's Just Jane column, explains that his new girlfriend is puzzled why he never invites her to his place. The reason: his landlord is a Peeping Tom who gets off on watching and listening to couples making love. He lives in a rented house with four other men, and they all joke about the landlord drilling spy holes in the walls and hiding microphones under beds.

Cheap rent vs privacy

Before meeting his girlfriend, the man was hooked on drunken one-night stands with strangers and didn't care about his kinky landlord. Now it's a different matter. He pays a very reasonable rent, and sometimes the landlord lets him off paying altogether. He wouldn't wish to expose his girlfriend to the landlord, but getting a good deal is important.

O'Gorman advises: "You can't stay in a property where you're being spied on and manipulated. No amount of discount is worth that level of intrusion." She says the voyeuristic creep needs to be reported, and if no one has consented to his watching, then he's committed a sexual offense. If he's filmed the tenant or a previous lover in secret, that's a very serious matter.

Speak out and leave

She urges the man to summon up the courage to speak out, talk to a trusted relative, and be scrupulously honest. "This creature needs to be exposed and stopped. You're the victim here and you must not feel ashamed for taking a stand." She tells him to inform his girlfriend of the truth and that his next move needs to be out of that "hellhole."
