Madeleine McCann disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on 3 May 2007, while her parents dined at a nearby tapas restaurant. Kate McCann found the room empty during a check at 10pm.
The couple have long believed Madeleine was taken by a local criminal. Jim Gamble, a former senior child protection officer, has said he believes Madeleine is still alive and that advances in technology could help solve the case.
In her book, Kate recalled that British police later told the family their ground-floor apartment, with its access to roads front and side, secluded entrance and partial tree cover, made it a prime target for burglars and criminals.
She also described her final moments with Madeleine, reading a book titled 'If you're happy and you know it', in which Madeleine counted animal squares, including some blank ones. Kate said that any memory of her baby is to be treasured.
The recent Netflix series 'The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann' has drawn criticism from Kate and Gerry, who said in a statement that they do not see how the programme will help the search and that it could potentially hinder the active police investigation.
