A North Tyneside street was brought to a standstill on Wednesday after a serious crash involving a police car. The collision, which involved multiple cars, prompted a major emergency response in Howdon.
Emergency services respond to Tynemouth Road collision
Firefighters, ambulance crews and police descended on Tynemouth Road after the crash was reported just after 9.30am. The street was taped off for a couple of hours, and two people were taken to hospital.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 9.15am today (Wednesday), we responded to a report of a collision involving a police car on Tynemouth Road in Howdon. Emergency services are currently in attendance.”
Two taken to hospital after multiple-car accident
The North East Ambulance Service dispatched two double crewed ambulances to the scene, a duty officer and two vehicles from the Hazardous Area Response Team. Two people were taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.
Three fire engines were initially blocking off the road, as a police cordon was erected from the Quality Vapes shop, right down to the junction of Churchill Terrace. Police officers conducted inquiries and two recovery vehicles arrived on the street before both the police car and other damaged cars were recovered.
Road reopens after cordon removed
Tynemouth Road has since reopened, with traffic having returned to normal as a result of the cordon being removed.
