A remorseless hit-and-run driver was caught singing along to Shaggy's 'It wasn't me' while the baby he killed fought for life in hospital, a court has heard.
Ashir Shahid, 20, struck pregnant healthcare assistant Ranju Joseph, 31, as she crossed a zebra crossing on Station Road in Bamber Bridge, Lancashire, on 29 September 2024. He was speeding at up to 71mph before the collision.
Mrs Joseph suffered serious head and spinal injuries and underwent emergency surgery to deliver her son, Olive, who was born prematurely at 24 weeks but died a few hours later. Mrs Joseph spent months in intensive care and had to relearn to walk.
After the crash, Shahid and his passenger abandoned the Toyota Prius, covered the damaged windscreen, and went to a chicken shop in Farnworth. There, they laughed and joked about the incident, and Shahid was later seen on video singing along to 'It wasn't me'.
Shahid pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He and his 17-year-old passenger are due to be sentenced at Preston Crown Court on Friday, 14 August.
