Glasgow Central Station Fire Causes Major Rail Disruption

A large fire near Glasgow Central station has led to significant travel disruption, with the station remaining closed 'until further notice'. The blaze broke out on Sunday afternoon at a vape shop on Union Street, and emergency services are still tackling the fire as of Monday morning.

Network Rail confirmed that no trains will run to or from the high-level platforms at Scotland's busiest station, and trains using the low-level platforms will not stop there. Disruption is expected to continue throughout Monday, affecting routes to and from Glasgow Central.

Avanti West Coast advised passengers of an amended service running to Preston, Carlisle, and Motherwell, allowing connections to Edinburgh and local Glasgow services. ScotRail warned of substantial disruption, urging passengers to check for updates before travelling. TransPennine Express cancelled services between Glasgow Central and Liverpool Lime Street or Manchester airport, with delays and cancellations on routes between Edinburgh and Newcastle or Manchester airport.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reported that 15 fire appliances and specialist resources were deployed at the height of the blaze. No casualties have been reported. Paul Sweeney, Labour MSP for Glasgow, said the building, dating back to 1851, has partially collapsed, but the nearby Forsyth Building, Caledonian Chambers, and Central Hotel appear unaffected.

First Minister John Swinney expressed concern on social media, thanking emergency services and urging the public to follow travel guidance and avoid the area.
