Gardai have arrested five boys in connection with an alleged gang sex attack on a teenage girl in Dublin. The arrests were made on Tuesday as part of an investigation by detectives from a Divisional Protective Services Unit.
Investigators believe six boys were involved in the attack, and that at least one of them filmed part of the incident on a mobile phone. The footage was later sent to the victim, who is understood to have had only a hazy memory of the ordeal.
The victim was reportedly brought to a location by a girl she knew, where she met the boys. She was given alcohol before being sexually assaulted. Officers believe she was subjected to a serious sexual assault by at least one of the boys, and that all six assaulted her in some way.
The five arrested boys were held on suspicion of sexual assault but have been released without charge. A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. Gardai confirmed the arrests in a statement, noting that all those involved are juveniles.
The victim confided in a family member after receiving the video, which led to the police being contacted. The investigation remains ongoing.
