The final two bodies of five Italian divers who tragically lost their lives in a scuba diving accident in the Maldives have been recovered, bringing the total death toll to five divers and one Maldivian rescuer. The incident, which occurred last week, is now considered the deadliest diving tragedy in the island nation's history.
Details of the Incident
The group of divers entered a deepwater cave network for an exploration mission. The recovered bodies were identified as Giorgia Sommacal, 22, and Muriel Oddenino, 31. They were found in the deepest section of the cave by Finnish diving experts who assisted in the search and recovery operation.
Investigation Underway
Maldivian authorities are investigating potential causes of the accident, including the possibility that the group descended far deeper than originally planned. As a result, the operating licence of the dive boat involved has been suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry.
Italian prosecutors have opened a culpable homicide investigation into the incident. Furthermore, the University of Genoa has stated that the fatal dive was not part of the scientific mission for which permits had been granted, raising questions about the nature of the expedition.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the diving community and prompted calls for stricter safety regulations in the Maldives, a popular destination for deep-sea diving enthusiasts.
