The family of a man who died following a crash on the M56 have paid tribute, saying he was turning his life around. Cody Lowndes, 27, died after being struck by a vehicle on the motorway on Saturday evening (October 17).
Prior to the crash, he had been spotted riding a motorbike "in a dangerous manner" on the M60 near Stockport Pyramid, according to Greater Manchester Police. Officers launched a pursuit which continued onto the M56.
Pursuit and Crash
Greater Manchester Police said "tactical contact" was subsequently made with the rider near junction five at Hale Barns. The chase carried on and the motorbike was "brought to a stop" near Wythenshawe, the force confirmed.
GMP stated that the motorbike's rider then "made off on foot across the motorway", reports the Manchester Evening News. He was subsequently involved in a crash with another vehicle and died at the scene.
Arrest and Aftermath
A second man involved in the crash — who had no connection to the original pursuit — was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs. He was additionally arrested on suspicion of causing death by driving uninsured.
The motorway remained closed for approximately 12 hours before reopening on Sunday morning.
Family Tribute
In their tribute, Cody's family said he had finally discovered a sense of purpose in his life through his baby. The family said: "Cody was turning his life around. The knowledge that his beautiful daughter will never know the real Cody that we all knew and loved is a hurt that we will struggle to heal, along with the knowledge that we will never get to see Cody live his life to his full potential. The potential we knew he always had."
"We will always love Cody, and he will live on in our hearts and memories. Please let us mourn Cody in peace, as a family."
