The family of a British man who went missing while traveling to the World Cup in the United States have issued an urgent appeal for information. Michael Hewitt, known to many as Leeds United super fan 'Little Mick', set off from Leeds on June 20 to travel to Boston via Barcelona but has not been heard from in over a week.
Last contact from Barcelona
Michael's brother Gary said the family last had contact with him from Barcelona in the early hours of June 21. 'He doesn't seem to have made it to Boston, and our last contact with him was from Barcelona in the early hours of Sunday morning, 21st June. Since then, his phone has been out of service and he hasn't posted any updates on social media. As you can imagine, we are now very worried for his safety,' Gary wrote in a social media appeal.
Family's plea
Gary described his brother as 'a familiar face to lots of Whites fans across the globe, having followed the club home and away for decades.' The family have urged anyone who has seen or had contact with Michael since June 21 to contact the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). They also confirmed that Interpol has been alerted to his disappearance, and they hope to learn soon whether he made it to the US or remained in Barcelona.
Official support
An FCDO spokesperson said: 'We are supporting the family of a British man reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.' The family continues to appeal for any information that might help locate Michael, who was last seen in Barcelona.
