Sir Keir Starmer has condemned the rioting in Southampton on Tuesday night, calling it a 'disgraceful' attack on the police. The Prime Minister's remarks came as he directly criticised Nigel Farage's response to the murder of Henry Nowak, urging that 'this is a time for serious work, not rage'.
Meanwhile, Hampshire Chief Constable Alexis Boon has apologised for the arrest and handcuffing of Henry Nowak, describing the bodycam footage as a 'very difficult watch'. In an interview with the BBC, Boon said: 'What was filmed there is a tragedy, an absolute tragedy, you can’t help but be affected by it.'
Boon expressed understanding of the family's distress, stating: 'I understand their point of view and why they’re upset with the police. We have said we are sorry for handcuffing and arresting Henry at that time.' He stressed that an independent investigation is underway and urged the public not to prejudge its findings.
The apology follows widespread criticism of police actions in the Nowak case. A former police officer was also forced to flee to a safe space after being falsely accused online of involvement in the arrest.
