A man from Essex is facing criminal charges following a serious collision between an e-scooter and a pedestrian in Pitsea. The incident, which occurred earlier this year, has left the victim with significant injuries and has reignited the debate over e-scooter safety on public highways.
Lee Phillips, 39, of Five Link Road, Benfleet, has been charged with causing serious injury by careless driving. The crash took place on High Road, Pitsea, on the afternoon of Thursday, 25 April.
Emergency services, including Essex Police and paramedics, rushed to the scene. The pedestrian, whose identity has not been disclosed, sustained serious injuries and required immediate medical attention.
Legal Proceedings Commence
Phillips is scheduled to appear at Southend Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, 18 June. The case is being closely watched as it represents a growing number of legal actions concerning incidents involving privately owned e-scooters.
Ongoing Safety Concerns
This case underscores the significant risks associated with the use of private e-scooters, which remain illegal to use on public roads and pavements outside of official government trial rental schemes. Despite their rising popularity, they present a clear danger to riders and pedestrians alike when used illegally.
Essex Police continue to investigate the full circumstances of the collision. Authorities are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area at the time to come forward to assist with their inquiries.
