Emergency services descended on Manchester's Gay Village on Thursday night after a person got into difficulty on a canal lock. Several emergency response vehicles attended Princess Street, at the junction with Canal Street, at around 11pm on June 25.
Rescue Operation Details
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed they were called to reports of a person in distress. Firefighters from Manchester Central and Eccles fire stations responded with three fire engines. A witness told the Manchester Evening News that approximately 10 emergency vehicles were at the scene, including police and North West Ambulance Service personnel.
A GMFRS spokesperson said: "At around 11pm last night (Thursday, June 25), firefighters were called to reports of a person in distress at the canal locks on Princess Street, Manchester city centre. Three fire engines from Manchester Central and Eccles fire stations quickly arrived at the scene."
Outcome and Aftermath
The individual was rescued from a lock on the Rochdale Canal and assessed by paramedics at the scene. The spokesperson added: "One male was assisted from the canal lock and handed into the care of the North West Ambulance Service. Crews were at the scene for around 40 minutes."
Images from the scene showed police, firefighters, and ambulance crews on the busy city centre street. The operation concluded without further incident, and no additional details about the person's condition have been released.
