Gardai have arrested a suspect in connection with an incident on Monday in which a man armed with a sword rammed several Garda cars and knocked down an officer in Castleknock, west Dublin.
The suspect, an Irish national from west Dublin, was taken into custody this morning. The incident began when Gardai responded to an alleged domestic abuse call, and the suspect armed himself with a sword, entered a vehicle, and rammed patrol cars before fleeing.
A Garda who was knocked down was hospitalised but has since been released. The Garda Representative Association (GRA) has called for increased Garda numbers, stating there are 'simply not enough to protect their colleagues when they come under attack.'
Detective Garda Mark Ferris, GRA representative for the DMR West, said the injured officer 'feels blessed' that his injuries are not life-threatening. He highlighted the ongoing law and order crisis, noting that Gardai are vulnerable to violent criminals with a flagrant lack of regard for civilised society.
A Garda spokesman confirmed the officer was struck by a car shortly before 1 am on May 20, 2024, and later discharged. Investigations are ongoing, and Garda welfare services have been provided.
