Driver Charged with Attempted Murder After Hitting Cyclist

A driver accused of attempting to murder a cyclist by deliberately running him over appeared in court on Monday, where he was told that his alleged victim may not survive. David Morgan, 40, was arrested on Friday after his Mercedes C180 reportedly struck Daniel Smith, a man in his 50s, who was riding a bicycle in Norwich, Norfolk.

Incident Details

The collision occurred during the evening rush hour at around 5pm. Mr Smith suffered severe head injuries and remains in a critical condition in hospital. Norfolk Police responded to reports that a white Mercedes had deliberately hit a cyclist.

Morgan, believed to be a forklift truck driver, allegedly failed to stop at the scene. He was arrested shortly before 7pm, about half a mile away, following police inquiries.

Court Proceedings

Appearing at Norwich Magistrates Court, Morgan heard a bleak prognosis from the prosecution. Prosecutor Josephine Jones stated that there is only a 'very remote' chance Mr Smith will survive, and the charge may be escalated to a more serious offence. She added, 'The Crown say this was a deliberate targeting of a cyclist.'

Morgan was charged on Sunday with attempted murder and drink-driving. He was remanded in custody by District Judge Jacqui Appleton, who said the case must be transferred to Norwich Crown Court due to its severity. Judge Appleton warned Morgan of 'a real prospect of immediate custody' if convicted.

During the brief hearing, Morgan only confirmed his name, address, and date of birth. As he was led to the cells, he shouted a greeting to his weeping father in the public gallery.

Police Investigation

The collision scene was closed for emergency services and police investigation. The Mercedes involved was recovered and seized. Police are appealing for dashcam footage or information about the white Mercedes' driving before the crash.

Morgan will appear at Norwich Crown Court on June 8.
