Dispersal order in Whalley Range after fireworks chaos

Police have put a dispersal order in force covering part of Whalley Range following reports of fireworks being thrown and anti-social behaviour on Bonfire Night. The order is the second to be introduced in Greater Manchester over fireworks-related disorder, after areas in Gorton and Abbey Hey were also covered.

Order in force for 48 hours

The measure covers the vicinity of Wilbraham Road, Manchester Road, Upper Chorlton Road and Withington Road. It follows reports of groups of young people setting off fireworks and anti-social behaviour, and will remain in place for 48 hours.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "The 48-hour order is in place as of 11.35pm on Thursday 5 November until 7am on Saturday 7 November 2026, and will be within the vicinity of Wilbraham Road, Manchester Road, Upper Chorlton road, and Withington Road areas."

Enhanced police powers

The order gives officers enhanced powers to direct individuals involved in, or suspected of being involved in, anti-social behaviour to leave the designated area for a specified period. The spokesperson added that the order forms part of the force's ongoing commitment to tackling anti-social behaviour and ensuring residents and visitors feel safe in their local community.

Officers will continue to patrol the area, and anyone with questions is encouraged to speak with them.

Patrols throughout the night

Neighbourhood Inspector Ian Haselden, for GMP's City of Manchester division, said: "Anti-social behaviour is an extremely problematic issue that affects the quality of life for people in our communities. Our response must be accordingly thorough and robust. We will be patrolling areas throughout the night, to tackle any issues that arise, while we will be proactively looking to shut down anything of concern before it becomes a problem."

He added: "We want the public to know that we are firmly behind them – we will be there for you tonight, tomorrow, and beyond."
