Emergency Services Respond to Blaze in Old Colwyn
Emergency crews have rushed to a village in Wales to tackle a blaze, amid reports that an explosion was heard. Firefighters, police, and other emergency services descended on Peulwys Lane in Old Colwyn, Conwy, on Monday afternoon after North Wales Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a property fire.
The blaze is affecting two neighbouring homes, with five fire engines and an aerial ladder platform sent to the scene. The fire service said it was first called at 12:41pm and confirmed all occupants of both properties have been accounted for, with no deaths or injuries reported. It continues to urge members of the public to stay away from the area while crews remain at the scene.
High Volume of Calls Received
Earlier, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it had received a high volume of calls about the incident. A spokesperson said: 'We are currently receiving high volume of calls in relation to a property fire on Peulwys Lane, Old Colwyn. Thank you for your calls - we are currently in attendance at the incident. We are asking people to avoid the area while the incident is ongoing.'
Residents in the Conwy village reported hearing numerous emergency service sirens before police closed Highlands Road as firefighters tackled the blaze. Images taken by NorthWalesLive show a large emergency services response, with pictures shared locally of a severely damaged property.
Local Councillor Provides Update
County councillor Cheryl Carlisle initially said: 'Urgent there has been an explosion and fire on Peulwys Estate, on Peulwys Lane. Highlands Road is currently closed at the site. Emergency services are in attendance. Hope everyone is ok.'
Providing a later update after attending the scene, Cllr Carlisle said she had been alerted to the incident before finding Highlands Road blocked off. She added: 'I understand it started in one house and spread to another. Very good to hear that no one has been killed or injured. The community will now rally round and help the families affected, with clothing and support. Housing at Conwy council will look to sort emergency accommodation and we are working with housing association Cartrefi Conwy.'
Resident Describes Scene
One local resident said they did not hear an explosion but realised something was wrong after seeing emergency service vehicles race past before later spotting smoke billowing from a property after looking out of their back window. The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
