Family Confronts Suspects in Court Over Teen's Murder
The family of 16-year-old Chloe Watson, who was allegedly murdered in what has been described as a "row over a boy," faced her suspected killers for the first time during a solemn court hearing at Leeds Crown Court. Grieving relatives, including her tearful mother Addel Watson and uncle Christopher Watson, were guided into the packed courtroom by police liaison officers, while the three teenage defendants appeared via prison video-links.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Chloe Watson Dransfield, from Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, was found unconscious outside a bungalow in the quiet Austhorpe suburb of Leeds shortly before 6am on Saturday morning. The teenager, who had recently secured a college placement to study hair and beauty, later died in hospital from knife wounds to her back. It is believed she had attended a party at the bungalow on Kennerleigh Avenue, owned by one of the suspects, shortly before the attack.
Shortly before being attacked, Chloe is understood to have messaged a friend asking to be picked up, highlighting the sudden and tragic nature of the events. An online fundraising page set up by a relative claimed her life was taken "in a flash over a boy," with her cousin Shantelle writing that Chloe "didn't even make it to her 18th" and was "such an innocent, beautiful soul taken too soon."
Court Appearance and Legal Proceedings
The three suspects—Kayla Smith, 18, Archie Rycroft, 19, and a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named—made their first appearance in crown court after being charged with murder. Smith, wearing a black jacket and white top, appeared via video-link from HMP New Hall women's prison, while Rycroft appeared from HMP Doncaster and the unnamed teenager from Wetherby young offender institute.
During the brief hearing, the defendants spoke only to confirm their names and dates of birth, with no pleas entered. A provisional three-week trial has been scheduled for November 10, with a pre-trial hearing set for May 1. The court heard that a "significant" amount of evidence relates to mobile phones, and no applications for bail were made. Judge Guy Kearl, KC, the Recorder of Leeds, remanded all defendants in custody until their next appearance.
Family Tributes and Community Response
In a heartfelt tribute issued by West Yorkshire Police, Chloe's mother Addel Watson described her daughter as "my life, my world, my best friend." The statement, also signed by her siblings Connor, Courtney, and Cienna, expressed profound grief, saying, "I cannot live without you—I need you. There's a big hole in my heart that can never be filled."
Chloe's father, Mark Dransfield, and her paternal family added that they are "utterly devastated" and will miss her "forever," noting her "beautiful, full of joy" personality and the "immeasurable" absence she leaves behind. In a show of community support, pink balloons are set to be released in memory of Chloe at Nibshaw Lane football pitch in Cleckheaton, with a Facebook post inviting everyone to "fill the sky with pink balloons in her honour."
The court also provided some comfort to the family by confirming that a second post-mortem examination is not required. Meanwhile, an 18-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of murder have been released on bail pending further enquiries, as the investigation continues into this heartbreaking case.
