A massive explosion at a fireworks factory in central China has resulted in at least 21 fatalities and 61 injuries, according to official reports. The blast occurred on Monday afternoon at the Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Co. facility in the city of Changsha, Hunan province, as reported by state-run newspaper China Daily.
Rescue and Evacuation Efforts
More than 500 rescue workers were rushed to the scene following the explosion. The force of the blast shattered windows and damaged houses across a wide area surrounding the factory, local media reports indicate. Residents living nearby were evacuated due to the ongoing risk of further explosions from two black powder warehouses at the site, according to a Xinhua report.
Aftermath and Investigation
Aerial footage broadcast on Tuesday by Chinese state television showed white plumes of smoke still rising from parts of the facility. The cause of the explosion has not yet been confirmed, but officials have taken "control measures" against those in charge of the company, though no further details have been provided. The incident remains under investigation.
