CBP officer fires weapon in JFK freeway altercation

A US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer discharged his firearm multiple times on a major road leading to John F. Kennedy International Airport early Tuesday morning, following what he described as an attack by another motorist.

Altercation Follows Minor Collision

The incident began with a minor crash involving two vehicles on the southbound Van Wyck Expressway at approximately 5 a.m. on Tuesday 16 December 2025. According to the officer's account, the other driver then assaulted him. In response, the on-duty officer drew his service weapon and fired several shots.

Investigation Underway, Suspect at Large

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police, who are leading the inquiry, confirmed the officer was not injured. It remains unclear whether the fleeing driver was struck by any of the gunfire. Authorities have not released the officer's name and have not specified if he was driving a marked government vehicle at the time.

As of now, no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. The other driver's identity and whereabouts are unknown.

Morning Commute Disrupted

The police investigation into the shooting near JFK airport caused significant traffic delays during the Tuesday morning rush hour. Congestion eased as the morning progressed, but the episode caused considerable disruption for travellers heading to the airport.

This serious incident on a key transport artery raises questions about security and the escalation of confrontations on busy roads.
