Forensic investigators have been examining the scene of a suspected arson attack in Howdon after a caravan was destroyed and windows were smashed.
Incident details
Emergency services were called to Oban Avenue on Wednesday night following a report of a disturbance. Northumbria Police said the suspects fled before officers arrived.
Photos from the scene showed a caravan burnt out, windows of a nearby property taped up, and a neighbouring car also damaged by the fire.
Police statement
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 11.30pm on Wednesday (August 5), we received a report of a disturbance at an address on Oban Avenue in Wallsend. It was reported that the windows of the address had been broken and a caravan that was parked at the address had been set alight. A second vehicle also subsequently caught fire."
The spokesperson added: "The suspects left the scene prior to officers arriving. Emergency services attended and nobody was found to be injured, and the fire was extinguished a short time later."
Investigation ongoing
The incident is being treated as suspected arson. Police are appealing for information, asking anyone with details to contact them via social media, the force website, or by calling 101, quoting reference number 26000417743.
A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We can confirm on the evening of Wednesday 5th August, three fire appliances attended a vehicle fire in North Tyneside. The emergency call was received by our Fire Control Team at 23:32 and crews from Byker and Tynemouth Community Fire Stations were dispatched to the scene at Oban Avenue in Howdon."
Crews left the scene at 00:02 in the early hours of Thursday morning, once the fire had been safely extinguished.
