A young motorist is fortunate to be alive after losing control of his vehicle, which tore apart and erupted in flames on one of Sydney's busiest roadways. Emergency crews responded to the Hume Highway in Villawood, in the city's southwest, around 9:30 PM on Sunday following reports of a violent collision.
According to reports, the 24-year-old man's sedan struck a hatchback before crashing into a power pole. The force of the impact was so severe that half of the sedan's wreckage was hurled 200 meters from the crash site. Footage captured the injured driver fleeing his burning car moments after the collision.
Bystanders and paramedics assisted him at the scene before he was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital with burns and suspected fractures. The hatchback driver, aged 48, was taken to Liverpool Hospital for assessment.
The crash snapped the power pole in half and brought down power lines, leaving dozens of homes without electricity. Power has since been restored. The Hume Highway was closed in both directions for the remainder of the night and did not fully reopen until 8 AM on Monday, causing peak-hour traffic delays.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident, including whether speed was a contributing factor. No arrests have been made. Authorities urge anyone with information or relevant dashcam or CCTV footage to contact Bankstown Police or Crime Stoppers.

The 52-year-old Nissan driver and two passengers—a 20-year-old man and the 87-year-old—were trapped in the wreckage. The 62-year-old bus driver was also trapped and later taken to hospital in stable condition. The Nissan driver and the younger passenger sustained minor injuries.
