
A chef with a depraved obsession for cannibalism, who meticulously compiled a hit list of five intended victims and dug a shallow grave in preparation, has been locked up for 16 years.
Anthony Gavin, 43, from Weston-super-Mare, was described by a judge as a 'significant danger to the public' after an investigation uncovered his sinister plans. Police found a horrifying collection of evidence at his home, including a handwritten 'kill list' and graphic research into cannibalism.
Chilling Evidence Uncovered
Detectives from Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands were alerted after Gavin's internet history revealed deeply disturbing searches. His digital footprint included queries on how to become a cannibal, how to kidnap someone, and where to find a secluded body disposal site.
Most alarmingly, officers discovered he had acted on his fantasies. In a wooded area, they found a freshly dug grave, measuring 5ft 4in, which Gavin had prepared for one of his targets.
A Targeted and Premeditated Plot
Gavin’s list named five specific individuals, including a former colleague. His plans were not random but were the result of careful, premeditated planning. The court heard how he had purchased tools, including a knife and ball bearings, and had conducted reconnaissance on his potential victims' homes and routines.
Prosecutor Simon Davis stated, "His actions went beyond mere research or fantasy. He had taken significant, practical steps towards committing acts of murder with a clear terrorist ideology."
Jail Sentence and Future Risk
At Bristol Crown Court, Judge William Hart sentenced Gavin to 16 years in prison with an extended licence period of five years. The sentence was given on the grounds of preparing terrorist acts, to which Gavin had pleaded guilty.
The judge emphasised the severity of his actions, noting, "You posed a very high risk of serious harm to the public. Your plans were advanced, realistic, and capable of being executed." Gavin will serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being considered for parole.
