Police are continuing to investigate the deaths of three women whose bodies were recovered from the sea off Brighton in the early hours of Wednesday. Emergency services were called to the beach near Madeira Drive at around 5.45am after concerns were raised for the women's welfare.
The women, believed to be aged between 20 and 30, are thought to have entered the water from the beach close to where they were discovered. They were first spotted near Brighton Palace Pier before drifting towards the marina, according to reports.
Sussex Police have confirmed that the families of the deceased have not yet been informed. Chief Superintendent Adam Hays said: “This is a sensitive investigation and we know the public are keen to understand the full circumstances. But our priority at this time is identifying these three women and locating their families.” He added that contrary to some reports, the women had not attended a nightclub prior to their deaths.
The beach, which had been closed for much of the day, has now reopened. The coastguard conducted an extensive search and has confirmed no one else is being sought. Brighton and Hove City Council leader Bella Sankey expressed shock and sadness, offering condolences to the families.
