A 64-year-old British man has died in Ibiza after he failed to surface when coming down a water slide at his hotel. The incident occurred at around 11:30am on Saturday at an unnamed hotel in the resort of Cala Tarida on the west coast of the island.
The man's relatives, including his wife and daughter who were on holiday with him, are understood to have witnessed the event. Hotel staff administered CPR and used a defibrillator after confirming he had gone into cardiac arrest. Emergency responders arrived and took over, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation Underway
A police investigation has been launched. A spokesman for the Civil Guard confirmed: 'A British holidaymaker aged 64 has died following an incident at a hotel in Cala Tarida in Ibiza on Saturday morning. Officers are reporting to a local court.'
A well-placed source added: 'The post-mortem will help determine if this man suffered some sort of health problem before he entered the water. He had entered the pool via a water slide. He was staying at the hotel with relatives, including his wife and a daughter.'
Recent Drownings in Spain
This tragedy follows a series of drownings involving British children in Spain. In the past month, four children from the UK have drowned in pools in the country. One was a three-year-old girl found 'floating face-down' in a holiday pool in Majorca on June 24. She was rescued by her parents and rushed to Son Espases Hospital in Palma in a 'very serious' condition with a weak pulse, but later died.
Cala Tarida is located in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia, near the village of Santa Agnes de Corona. The Civil Guard continues to investigate the circumstances of the man's death.
