A British-born man accused of a shooting spree in the US state of Georgia has died in jail. Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a 26-year-old US Navy veteran, was found unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday evening, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. No cause of death was given, and officials said there were no suspicious circumstances.
Abel had been charged with the murders of Lauren Bullis, an employee of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Prianna Weathers, following a series of shootings near Atlanta. Police were also seeking an additional murder charge after Tony Matthews, who was injured in a shooting outside a shopping centre, died on Sunday.
US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed that Abel received US citizenship in 2022. He described the attacks as “acts of pure evil” and said Bullis was “brutally shot and stabbed to death”. Mullin added that Abel had also allegedly shot a woman outside a drive-through restaurant before randomly shooting a homeless man multiple times outside a supermarket in Brookhaven.
Abel was taken into custody in Troup County, south-west of Atlanta, following co-ordination with local detectives. The Brookhaven Police Department confirmed his arrest.
