George Smyth, an 18-year-old British student from Newport, Shropshire, has been missing since November while hiking in Romania's Bucegi Mountains. Search and rescue crews have resumed operations in Valea Gigănesti, where the University of Bristol student was last believed to have been.
Fresh Search Under Difficult Conditions
The latest search effort faced challenging conditions due to significant snow cover, with depths between two and three metres in some areas and drifts exceeding three metres. Rescue teams continued scanning and digging in relevant locations, including areas where snow had accumulated beneath rocks. However, no concrete leads have emerged, as reported by NeedToKnow.
Previous Search Hampered by Weather
At the time of his disappearance, local mountain rescue service Salvamont Brasov confirmed that severe weather and snow up to three metres deep had hampered search efforts. A spokesperson expressed optimism that rising temperatures would thaw the snow, allowing access to difficult areas. In a statement, the rescue service said: "Unfortunately, no other conclusive hints have emerged at this moment." They added that searches would continue subject to mountain conditions, noting that the prolonged winter had resulted in snow depths far greater than expected.
Family's Heartbreaking Statement
In December, rescuer Sebastian Marinescu stated that George's last known location was in a "very isolated and hard-to-access mountain area." By January, George's family confirmed they had been forced to accept his death, saying: "When the mountains that took him are ready to let go, George will be found, and we will bring him home to say goodbye."
