Body of Man in 70s Recovered from River Fowey

Police in Cornwall recovered the body of a man in his 70s from the River Fowey on Thursday, July 9, in what they are treating as a tragic accident. Emergency services were called around 4:30 PM following a report of a person in the water. Despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Statement and Family Support

St Austell Police issued a statement: "At around 4:35pm yesterday, we were called by Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service following a report of a person in the River Fowey. Emergency services recovered a man, aged in his 70s, from the water and attempted life saving measures, but he was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene. We believe this incident to have been a tragic accident. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist teams."

Recent Drowning Incidents Across the UK

This tragedy follows a series of drowning deaths amid scorching temperatures. On the same day, an 18-year-old man died at Dovestone Reservoir in Oldham, Greater Manchester Police reported. Another 18-year-old was found dead near a weir at Darley Abbey Mills in Derby after two teenagers got into difficulty, according to Derbyshire Constabulary. In Scotland, the body of a woman was recovered from the Falls of Falloch near Crianlarich, Stirling, on Saturday morning after she got into difficulty on Friday night. Police Scotland said her death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.

Water Safety Campaign
