A body has been found in the search for a 13-year-old boy who went missing while swimming off the coast of Hornsea, East Yorkshire, police confirmed.

A body has been found in the search for a 13-year-old boy who went missing while swimming off the coast of Hornsea, East Yorkshire.

Emergency response

Emergency services were called to Hornsea at about 6pm on Tuesday following concerns for the safety of a 13-year-old boy who was swimming in the sea off the South Promenade area. Chief Superintendent Phil Booker, of Humberside Police, said: "Upon attending, it was discovered that a 13-year-old boy had reportedly got into difficulty whilst swimming in the water."

An extensive search and rescue operation was launched, involving HM Coastguard, Hornsea Inshore Rescue, the RNLI and police. The force has since confirmed that the child's body has been found.

Heartbreaking outcome

Chief Superintendent Phil Booker said: "This is an incredibly heartbreaking outcome, and our thoughts are with the boy's family and friends at this devastating time."

Footage and photographs taken at the scene showed a lifeboat on the sea and an HM Coastguard helicopter circling above.
