A body has been found at Charlton Athletic's stadium, triggering a police investigation at the ground. Emergency services were called to The Valley in the early hours of Monday morning, where a man was pronounced dead shortly after crews arrived.
Police Investigation Launched
Met Police officers have launched a probe into the death, while the club confirmed they are assisting with enquiries. A spokesperson for the Championship club said: "Charlton Athletic are supporting the police with their enquiries following the discovery of a deceased individual at The Valley on Tuesday morning."
The spokesperson added: "Police were called to the stadium today after an incident that occurred in the early hours of Monday morning. A male was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The death remains under investigation. Anyone with information, or who may have witnessed the incident, is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference 2809/18AUG."
Club's Response
The club expressed condolences, saying: "Everyone at Charlton Athletic would like to express their deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the individual’s family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time." The spokesperson noted that the club is continuing to assist authorities and respectfully asks that privacy of those affected is respected.
There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing on the part of the club. The spokesperson thanked staff for their professionalism during the "particularly difficult and distressing situation." The incident remains under investigation as police appeal for witnesses.
