Lauren Ingrid Flanigan, 32, who was charged with the murder of her three-year-old daughter Sophia Rose, has died in hospital. She was found unresponsive in her cell at Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre on Friday night and was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital, where she died on Sunday.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli has promised a full investigation into the death in custody. 'There are questions that do need to be answered,' he said, adding that a coronial inquest is expected.
Flanigan was arrested after Sophia Rose was found with multiple wounds in the front yard of a home in Moore Park Beach, north of Bundaberg, on 26 May. Two other children, aged one and two, were at the property but uninjured.
A GoFundMe page for Sophia Rose's father and siblings has raised $55,000. Organiser Connor Thompson described Sophia as a sweet child with an infectious laugh, saying 'her smile was like a ray of sunshine and her heart was as pure as gold.'
