A major fire broke out in Blackpool overnight, completely destroying a commercial building that housed a furniture shop and a children's play area. Fifteen fire engines from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service were called to Waterloo Road at 11:30 pm on Friday, February 6, to tackle the blaze.
Crews used six breathing apparatus and two ground monitors to extinguish the fire. Road closures remain in place, and residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed if they can see or smell smoke. Three fire engines remain at the scene on Saturday morning to dampen down remaining flames and make the area safe.
The owner of Smart Mart, a home furniture shop, posted a video on Facebook confirming the fire and expressing shock. He said he does not know how the fire started and feels sick about the damage, but vowed the business will return stronger. Smart Play Blackpool, the children's play area in the same building, issued a statement saying the building and play area have been completely destroyed, and they are truly heartbroken.
No injuries have been reported. Nearby properties were evacuated as a precaution. Blackpool Police are assisting with traffic management and have urged people to avoid the area. Smart Play Blackpool assured customers that deposits for parties and bookings are safe and will be refunded.
