A large fire erupted at a scrapyard in Cotteridge, Birmingham, on Wednesday morning, prompting a major emergency response. Residents reported hearing an explosion before thick black smoke filled the sky over Lifford Lane.
West Midlands Fire Service deployed 14 fire engines, a 4x4 brigade response vehicle, and a hydraulic aerial platform to tackle the blaze, which spread to a nearby timber yard. Around 60 firefighters from multiple stations are at the scene.
Locals were advised to close windows and doors due to the smoke, and motorists were urged to avoid the area. A nearby railway line was unaffected, and trains continued running normally.
West Midlands Ambulance Service attended alongside fire and police colleagues. The fire was brought under control, but emergency services remained at the scene to monitor the situation.
