A resurgence of debunked conspiracy theories linking Bill Gates to the breeding and release of ticks has emerged on MAHA social media platforms. These theories falsely claim that Gates is behind a surge in tick bites and red meat allergies to promote plant-based diets.
The Resurfaced Theories
Social media users are reviving old claims that Bill Gates is deliberately releasing ticks to cause alpha-gal syndrome, a red meat allergy. Another prominent theory alleges that Pfizer planted ticks to boost demand for its Lyme disease vaccine, despite the company announcing its vaccine development plans in 2020.
Fact-Checking the Claims
Both the Bill Gates and Pfizer tick conspiracy theories have been widely debunked by independent fact-checkers. There is no credible evidence supporting the notion that ticks are being deliberately released by either party. These theories follow previous debunked conspiracies, such as the claim that Lyme disease originated from a Cold War-era U.S. bioweapons program at Plum Island.
Actual Causes of Tick Increase
Experts attribute the recent spike in tick-related emergency room visits to environmental factors rather than malicious intent. Warmer winters, changes in landscape management, and reduced wildlife diversity are key drivers of tick population growth and increased human exposure. Public health officials emphasize that these natural factors are responsible, not conspiracy theories.
