Baby found in freezer in Spanish basement flat

A baby's body has been discovered inside a freezer in a basement apartment in Allariz, Galicia, in western Spain, prompting an investigation by the Civil Guard.

The remains were found by a relative of a woman, now deceased, who had previously owned the freezer. The relative made the discovery after opening the appliance, which was located in the basement of her home, specifically within the storage area of the garage.

Investigation launched

Authorities from the nearby city of Ourense are investigating following the discovery on Monday, as reported by La Voz de Galicia. The body was transferred on the same day so that forensic specialists could establish the cause of death.

Local reports indicate that the remains are those of a foetus of just over 32 weeks gestation. Experts are reportedly working to determine whether the child's death occurred during childbirth or was the result of a miscarriage.

Forensic examination

Pathologists are also attempting to establish when the baby died, with the date of death potentially going back as far as two decades. Officers are said to be taking statements from family members and neighbours as part of their ongoing enquiries.

Investigators are also working to determine a connection between the woman who owned the freezer and the deceased child. DNA samples collected from close relatives could identify the genetic profile and shed light on this matter, as well as establishing whether any biological link exists with the family.

The inquiry, commissioned by the Ourense courts, remains ongoing.
