Greek police have arrested a 26-year-old foreign national for manslaughter and robbery over the death of British charity worker Elisabeth Jane Ross, whose body was found in a suitcase in Athens.
Ross, 38, from Scotland, was discovered in an abandoned building in the Kypseli district on Saturday. The 26-year-old is suspected of using her bank card after her death.
Phone remained active after death
Detectives are investigating Ross's mobile phone, which remained active after she died. Greek media reported that text messages were sent claiming she 'needed some time to herself' and 'wanted to be alone for a while'.
Police believe the messages were sent to create a false impression that she was still alive. The phone was switched off when the case began to attract international attention.
Police told Greek media: 'The phone was being used. Text messages were even sent obviously with a view to making people believe she was still alive.'
Homeless man discovered body
Ross's body was found after a homeless man followed a 'bad smell' into an empty building and saw something coming out of a suitcase which 'looked like a human limb'.
Ross, a Scottish national, volunteered at local NGO charities and often visited the Greek capital, it has emerged.
