A US Army veteran from Houston, Texas, has been released on bond after a shocking incident where he allegedly opened fire on a group of teenagers playing a classic doorbell prank.
The 53-year-old man, identified as Anthony Verret, is now facing serious charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The event unfolded on a seemingly ordinary evening in the Cypress Park neighbourhood.
The Alleged Incident
According to court documents and local law enforcement, a car carrying several teenagers stopped outside Verret's home. Two of the youths got out and rang his doorbell before quickly running away—a prank commonly known as 'ding dong ditch'.
In a response that has been labelled as grossly disproportionate, Verret is accused of grabbing his firearm, exiting his home, and firing multiple shots at the fleeing vehicle as it sped away. Tragically, one of the bullets struck a 15-year-old boy in the head, who was sitting in the back seat of the car.
Aftermath and Legal Proceedings
The wounded teenager was rushed to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, he was reported to be in a stable condition following emergency treatment for his injuries.
Anthony Verret was subsequently arrested and taken into custody. A Harris County district court judge set his bond at $75,000, a sum he has since posted to secure his temporary release. The case continues to develop as investigators piece together the full sequence of events.
