Three people killed in a collision on the A1 in Northumberland in May have been named after inquests into their deaths were opened. Torsten Wolfgang Andreas Calenberg, Tilla Engeline Marta Calenberg and Anne Marie Zorn all died in the crash at Denwick on May 21 2026.
Inquests opened and adjourned
Northumberland Senior Coroner Andrew Hetherington opened the inquests into all three deaths and adjourned them pending the conclusion of an ongoing police investigation. During three brief hearings at Northumberland Coroners' Court, Mr Hetherington confirmed the identity of each individual and gave brief details of the circumstances of their deaths.
The court heard that Mr Calenberg, 80, had been at the wheel of a red Hyundai travelling southbound, along with Ms Calenberg, 74. Ms Zorn, 64, had been the front-seat passenger in a second car, a silver Volkswagen, which had been travelling northbound.
Collision details
The incident happened at around 2.30pm between the Denwick and South Charlton junctions on the A1. Discussing the incident in court, Mr Hetherington said: "At around 14.27pm a collision has occurred. A silver [car] was travelling northbound when it collided with a red Hyundai. Ms Zorn was the front-seat passenger [in the silver car] and was pronounced dead at the scene. I am formally opening this investigation and suspending it pending the outcome of the police investigation."
Police have previously reported that the silver Volkswagen Polo was travelling northbound when, for reasons yet to be established, it collided with a red Hyundai i20 travelling in the opposite direction. All three individuals were declared dead at the scene, and the driver of the Volkswagen was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.
Investigation continues
The crash saw a section of the road closed for around seven hours. At the time, Northumbria Police's Insp Steven Clare said: "This is an incredibly tragic incident where three people have lost their lives – and one other person remains in a serious condition. Our thoughts remain firmly with all of their loved ones, and we are dedicated to getting them the answers they deserve."
The police appealed for witnesses to come forward, and it is understood that the police investigation continues. The inquests remain adjourned pending its outcome.
