A 74-year-old mariner found himself caught in a severe storm and had to call for emergency assistance after his vessel sustained significant damage approximately 489 miles off the coast of Oregon on May 26. Using a handheld satellite communicator, the experienced sailor managed to contact the US Coast Guard.
Rescue Operation
A helicopter was dispatched to assist, along with the Silver Whisper, a cruise ship owned by Royal Caribbean Group's Silversea Cruises. The sailor was traveling from Hawaii to Canada, a route he had successfully completed many times before. Dramatic footage released by Kamera One shows the rescue unfolding, with cruise crew gradually guiding the small boat toward the larger vessel.
The mariner's boat had a broken mast and a disabled engine after battling 30-foot waves. The cruise liner was on a 24-night voyage from Papeete in Tahiti when it diverted course to help. An air rescue was ruled out because the vessel was too far from Hawaii.
Passenger Accounts
Some passengers on the Silver Whisper shared details on Facebook. One passenger noted, 'We were the closest ship to him - it took 7 hours to reach him, with no exact coordinates. A needle in a haystack. Happy to report he was found, is alive - with a broken shoulder, but doing well.' Another described the event as 'quite an experience' and explained that passengers were sent to their cabins due to collapsed stabilizers caused by rough seas.
Eventually, the crew managed to pull the man aboard the cruise liner. He suffered a shoulder injury and received medical care before being transported back to Vancouver. The Daily Mail has approached Royal Caribbean and the US Coast Guard for comment.
Similar Rescue in April
This is not the first time a cruise ship has rescued a sailor in distress. In April, a Carnival Cruise Line ship saved a seafarer and his cat from a distressed vessel off the coast of Mexico. The unidentified man and his pet, Dahlia, had been drifting for four days in the Gulf of Mexico before encountering the Carnival Legend. The ship, en route to Cozumel, spotted flares from the sailboat and sent a rescue boat.
The sailor received medical attention, and the crew cared for Dahlia. Witness Alan Loy told Fox 26, 'We've never experienced anything like this. To be out in the middle of the ocean, and then you look out, and you see a spotlight shining on a sailboat that was just going up and down in the waves. You can tell that it was distressed.' His wife, Courtney Loy, added that the boat was rocking heavily. Video captured by the couple showed the sailboat swaying in tall waves with its sails down but the structure intact. The rescue did not disrupt the cruise's schedule.
