In a scene straight out of a Hollywood thriller, a daring gang of thieves has pulled off a multi-million-pound heist in the heart of Indonesia's capital, making off with a luxury Lexus SUV packed with precious gold bars.
The audacious robbery unfolded in broad daylight in Central Jakarta, targeting a vehicle that was acting as a makeshift armoured truck for a local gold trading business. The entire incident was captured by security cameras, providing police with crucial evidence.
The Mechanics of the Heist
According to local law enforcement, the heist was executed with precision. The thieves, travelling in a white Toyota Alphard, shadowed the Lexus LX 600 before forcefully intercepting it. Armed and masked, they threatened the driver and a security guard, forcing them from the vehicle before speeding away with the incredibly valuable cargo.
Central Jakarta Police Chief, Commissioner Komarudin, stated, "The stolen goods are 5kg of gold bars. The value is still being calculated, but it is estimated to be billions of rupiah." This translates to a haul worth well over £250,000.
A Sophisticated Criminal Operation
Authorities believe this was not a random act of crime but a well-planned operation. The perpetrators displayed a clear understanding of the vehicle's route and schedule, suggesting prior surveillance.
Police are now examining the CCTV footage meticulously. "We are still investigating the perpetrators and the number of people involved in the robbery based on the CCTV," added Komarudin. The stolen Lexus, with the registration number B 1084 XFR, was later recovered abandoned in North Jakarta, but the gold was long gone.
This high-value theft has sent ripples through the local business community, highlighting the risks associated with transporting valuable commodities. The investigation continues as authorities hunt for the organised criminal gang behind this sophisticated raid.
