Saudi Arabia is reportedly bracing for a potential escalation with Iran as fears mount that Tehran could launch new missile strikes targeting the kingdom. According to Elior Levy, an Israeli journalist for Channel Kan 11, Riyadh is 'on high alert for a multi-front scenario.'
Background of Tensions
The report comes two days after Saudi Arabia condemned Iranian attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain, which occurred earlier this month. In a statement on X, the Saudi foreign ministry said Iranian aggression poses a threat to regional and international security. They stated: 'Iran's ongoing attacks undermine international efforts to restore security... Iran's ongoing attacks mean further escalation.'
Saudi Arabia's Response
Riyadh has also pledged to assist Bahrain and Kuwait in strengthening their defense and security measures. Earlier this month, Reuters reported that Saudi Arabia launched strikes on Iran in retaliation for attacks carried out in the kingdom during the war, which was first initiated by former US President Donald Trump in February.
During the conflict, reports alleged that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman urged Mr. Trump to continue the war despite other nations calling for an end to the fighting. On February 28, the US and Israel struck targets across Iran, killing then Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with dozens of other senior officials.
Regional Implications
The heightened alert status underscores the fragile state of the Middle East, with the potential for a broader conflict involving multiple nations. Saudi Arabia's preparations signal a readiness to defend its territory and allies against any further Iranian aggression.
