Prolific Thief with 362 Offences Jailed Again for Shoplifting

One of the North East's most prolific shoplifters, Jamie Brown, has added to his appalling record of 362 offences by committing six further thefts. The 37-year-old, who already has 221 theft convictions spanning 23 years, appeared at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court this week via video link from prison, where he is already serving time for shoplifting.

Brazen Thefts from Multiple Stores

Between December 2025 and May 2026, Brown targeted Aldi in North Shields, Heron Foods and Iceland in Ashington, and Co-op stores in Whitley Bay and Bedlington. He stole alcohol, meat, butter, and laundry products worth over £275. On one occasion, he entered Heron Foods, concealed 10 packs of Lurpak butter in his coat, and refused to return them when challenged. Minutes later, he went to Iceland and took five lamb chops, telling staff: 'F*** off, I'm taking these.'

Prosecutor Jasmine Dodd detailed the offences: 'On May 1, the defendant entered Heron Foods in Ashington and was captured on CCTV placing 10 packs of Lurpak in his jacket. He was challenged but refused to give the goods back and left the store. The goods were not recovered. On the same day, the defendant attended Iceland down the road, a store which he is barred from. He took five lamb chops. When challenged, he said "I'm f***** taking these". Another staff member managed to retrieve the goods.'

Plea and Outstanding Debts

Brown, formerly of Rosalind Street, Ashington, pleaded guilty to six counts of shop theft. He already owes £6,653.67 in court fines and costs. Paul Dunn, defending, said there are plans for Brown to enter rehabilitation after release and that accommodation will be available. Magistrates adjourned sentencing until September 24, when the prosecution will apply for a Criminal Behaviour Order.
