Arsenal are reportedly in talks with the representatives of Bayer Leverkusen forward Christian Kofane, but may need to fend off interest from Newcastle United to secure the teenager's signature. The 19-year-old Cameroon international has attracted significant attention following an impressive debut season in the Bundesliga, where he scored seven goals and provided four assists in 29 appearances.
Kofane's rise to prominence
Kofane joined Leverkusen from Albacete in a €5.25 million (£4.5 million) deal in 2025. His performances in the Champions League, particularly against Arsenal in the last 16, caught the eye of the north London club. According to German publication Bild, Arsenal have had Kofane 'on their radar' since that match and remain in 'close contact' with his agents.
Kofane's agent, Eric Depolo, confirmed the interest in an interview with Daily Arsenal, stating: 'The manager [Mikel Arteta] likes him very much.' Depolo also listed Chelsea, Newcastle, Everton, Brentford, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich as other clubs that have expressed interest.
Arsenal's pole position
Depolo suggested that Arsenal are in a strong position to land Kofane, citing the presence of Mikel Arteta and defender William Saliba. 'I think it is too early to say which club is leading the race,' Depolo said. 'But due to the fact that the player speaks Spanish, like Mikel Arteta, and that William Saliba is originally from Cameroon, I would say Arsenal are in pole position. There is contact between me and Arsenal. But their focus right now is to win the league – from there everything will start moving.'
Newcastle's interest and potential obstacles
Newcastle have reportedly joined the race for Kofane, having recently secured the signing of Hoffenheim winger Bazoumana Toure. However, the Magpies' failure to qualify for the Champions League next season could hinder their pursuit. Leverkusen are reluctant to sell Kofane after just one year, but a bid of around €100 million (£86 million) could tempt them to part with the striker.
Kofane's current contract runs until the summer of 2029. Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes and Kim Falkenberg are said to be relaxed about the growing interest and are in regular communication with the player's camp.
Agent's endorsement
Depolo described Kofane as a 'complete' striker who would be a top asset for Arsenal for the next decade. 'He is a €100 million player. With Kofane, Arsenal would have a top striker for the next ten years,' Depolo explained. 'I have never had as many calls in my life as now regarding Kofane. Right now, he is the best Under-21 striker in Europe and the most complete one. He has speed, technique, defends very well and is strong in the air. It is very difficult to find all these attributes in one striker.'
Former coach's praise
Former Leverkusen head coach Kasper Hjulmand also praised Kofane's attitude and potential. 'For me, it's impressive enough that Kofi came to Europe at the end of 2024 and moved here in the summer of 2025 – and how he has developed since then,' Hjulmand said. 'The way he works, how he adapts and learns… I criticised him a bit in training a few weeks ago and then the next day he came to me and said, “Please, keep it up. I want more criticism, I want to learn,” and that's why he's making these strides. He has a great future.'
