A predator who lied about his age and had sex with a child has been jailed for two years. Brandyn Hampson claimed to be 17 when he was really two years older, backing up his claim with a fake driving licence.
Threats to victims
Airdrie Sheriff Court heard he threatened to disclose naked pictures and videos of the girl when she stopped contacting him. He made similar threats to another child and asked her to lie in court when he was prosecuted.
Hampson, now 22, formerly of Beechbank Avenue, Airdrie, was placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for 10 years. He admitted having unlawful sex, communicating indecently with children and threatening to disclose intimate images.
Sheriff's remarks
Hampson also admitted attempting to pervert the course of justice by instructing one of the girls to lie and threatening to hurt her if she attended court. Sheriff Tony McGlennan acknowledged the accused's "highly challenging" upbringing but described his behaviour as "premeditated, calculating and cruel".
The sheriff said: "The effect on the two victims, who were children, will be traumatising for many years to come. You persisted in conduct that must have terrorised them."
Case details
Non-harassment orders mean Hampson must stay away from the victims for 15 years. Annette Ward, prosecuting, said he met the first girl on social media in August 2022. Later she told her family they had sex at least five times in a wooded area.
The girl's family were suspicious about Hampson's age but she said he'd shown her a driving licence that proved he was 17. Hampson had persuaded the girl to send him naked photos and had sent pictures of himself in return.
At one point when she'd stopped contacting him he texted one of her friends, saying: "If she doesn't message me by Monday I'll send her pics everywhere. I promise." In a message to the girl herself he added: "Let's talk. Don't make me do things I would regret."
Police were called in and when officers searched Hampson's home they found a counterfeit driving licence in the name of 'Brandon Dior', stating he was 17.
Further offending
Hampson began messaging another teenage girl in February 2024. By this time he was 20 but still claimed to be 17. They exchanged intimate photos and videos before Hampson was arrested in October 2024. He made an initial court appearance in January last year and was freed on bail.
Hampson then put pressure on the girl to lie to the authorities, telling her he would "leak" the photos and videos she had sent him if the case against him went ahead. At this point he told the girl he wanted to have sex with her. Hampson appeared in court with no previous convictions.
Defence advocate Amy Hunter produced references, including one from his employer. She said: "He was an immature young man who suffered adverse childhood experiences, but is now described as respectful, courteous and cooperative. He demonstrates honesty and maturity, and is hard-working and willing to assist others."
Ms Hunter acknowledged that social workers described Hampson as at high risk of re-offending, but suggested he "would benefit from education rather than imprisonment". She added: "He had been smoking a considerable amount of cannabis but hasn't for around two months. The court proceedings have been very much an awakening for him."
