Manchester women jailed over £200k cocaine in shopping bags

Two women from Manchester have been jailed after police discovered cocaine worth £200,000 hidden in shopping bags in their car. Chelsea Kelly, 36, of Firbank Road, and Alexandra Lewis, 36, of Dunstall Road, were stopped by officers in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, earlier this year.

Drugs disguised as designer watches

When officers searched the vehicle, they found shopping bags containing eight kilos of cocaine, packaged to look like designer watches. The drugs had a street value of around £200,000.

Both women were convicted of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday, October 7, and each sentenced to six years and nine months in prison.

Arrest on Bradley Road

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said the women "were stopped by officers from our Proactive Intercept Team (PIT) as they drove along Bradley Road, Huddersfield in February this year."

"Their vehicle was searched, and a shopping bag containing eight kilos of cocaine – with a street value of around £200,000 - was found inside. The pair were arrested and later charged following an investigation by the Kirklees Precision Team," the spokesperson added.

Footage of the stop

The force released video footage from the scene. Officers approached the car and instructed the women to open the locked door, shouting "open the door now" as one of the women screamed "what" in response. An officer then told Kelly to put her phone down before both women were asked to get out of the vehicle as they were detained under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Lewis was driving the vehicle and was handcuffed at the scene. Kelly, the passenger, was subsequently arrested.
