At least 43 people were killed in a wave of gun violence across the United States over the Fourth of July weekend, with dozens more wounded, including a woman and a child shot at a World Cup gathering in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles World Cup Gathering Shooting
In one of the most prominent incidents, four people were shot in an east Los Angeles neighborhood where soccer fans had gathered to watch Mexico's World Cup match against England on Sunday night. The Los Angeles Police Department reported that a suspect pulled out a gun during an argument at approximately 9:30 p.m. local time, after the match ended in a 3-2 defeat eliminating Mexico, and opened fire.
The shots struck two intended victims and two bystanders, a woman and a boy, who left the scene to seek help. All four were treated at local hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries. No other details about the victims or the age of the minor were released.
Nationwide Shootings Over the Holiday Weekend
According to the Gun Violence Archive, which tracks firearm-related incidents, at least 43 people were killed since early Saturday, the 250th anniversary of the US declaration of independence. The database has recorded 6,604 fatalities from gun violence in 2025 as of Monday morning, including at least 224 mass shootings, defined as incidents where four or more people are killed or injured, excluding the shooter.
In Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, two people were killed on Sunday in a shooting amid a large crowd. Officers found three people shot, including Ronald Cleveland Brown, 39, and Devante Elliott, 34, both later declared dead, according to local ABC affiliate WJBF.
In Austin, Texas, a man and a woman in their late teens or early 20s were shot dead in a nightclub parking lot early Sunday, CBS Austin reported. The shooting followed an altercation at about 4 a.m. "I can't say that it stems from the nightclub at all," said Travis County sheriff's office spokesperson Kristen Dark. "It happened in the parking lot of the nightclub, but we don't know at this point in time what led to the altercation." Investigators were also working on a separate gun fatality in the city, the death of a man in a sports bar parking lot late Saturday during a shooting that injured another male.
Compton and Mississippi Incidents
In Compton, California, three people were killed in separate Independence Day block parties on Saturday, the Los Angeles County sheriff's office said. In the first shooting, a woman and a man were killed; in the second, a man was the victim.
In Wilkinson County, Mississippi, the Centreville Police Department is investigating a mass shooting early Saturday that left two adult men dead and at least nine others wounded, WLBT News reported.
Context and Calls for Reform
Constantly high rates of gun violence in the US have prompted calls for Congress to implement more substantial federal firearms control, but lawmakers have been unable to pass such restrictions. Studies suggest gun violence can be more likely during major holidays than at other times.
