A horrific attack erupted at an international airport in Ecuador, trapping passengers amid violence and claiming at least one life. Shocking footage from José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil spread across social media, showing scenes of pandemonium as distressed onlookers tended to the injured.
Targeted Assassination at Airport
Gunshots rang out at the airport terminal on Wednesday, June 17, killing one man and injuring another in what authorities believe was a targeted assassination. Video footage and witness testimony detailed a "heavy shootout" within the airport, with "several people shot."
The armed assault occurred at the entrance to the international airport, near the international arrivals departure section. A gang of attackers unleashed bullets on their targets in what officials suspect was a premeditated strike.
Victims and Arrests
Early accounts indicate the fatally wounded man, thought to be the primary target, had just landed at the terminal when he was shot. His spouse was present during the incident. The wounded survivor was rushed to hospital for emergency care.
An insider from Ecuador's Ministry of the Interior confirmed to local news outlet PRIMICIAS that two people had been detained in relation to the assault. The duo were apprehended in the airport terminal's car park.
State of Emergency
The shooting occurred just 24 hours after Ecuador announced a state of emergency across 10 provinces due to a rise in gang-related violence and organized crime. The incident highlights the escalating security challenges facing the South American nation.
