Alleged crime gang leader Daniel Kinahan will apply for bail in the coming weeks, Dublin's Special Criminal Court was told on Monday, October 12.
The 49-year-old appeared before the court in Dublin, where he is charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation between October 18, 2015, and April 6, 2017. Wearing a grey suit, black shirt and glasses, he did not speak during the brief hearing.
Arrest and Extradition
Kinahan, alleged to be a leader of the Kinahan organised crime group, was arrested in the United Arab Emirates on April 15 under an arrest warrant issued by the Irish courts. The arrest was carried out under a bilateral extradition agreement between Ireland and the UAE.
He was flown to Ireland on an Irish Government jet in August and taken by high-speed Garda escort to court in Dublin, where he was charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation.
Bail Application and Legal Proceedings
Darragh Mackin, from Phoenix Law in Belfast, made a formal application to come on record as Kinahan's solicitor. Mackin said he was "grateful" for the court's accommodation last week when the case was put back to allow him to attend to other matters.
The solicitor told the court that papers would be lodged and a bail application made in due course, to be heard through the High Court. He said the trial timetable needs to factor in expert examination of digital evidence, and that full disclosure is sought regarding two other investigations in Spain and Dubai, in which Kinahan was acquitted in other jurisdictions.
Prosecution barrister Dominic McGinn SC said the accused was extradited in August on a single charge, with a "complex factual matrix" behind it. He noted the statement of fact ran to 189 pages and that the book of evidence would take a number of weeks to prepare.
Mackin said he had no issues with the stated matters and wanted them factored into the timetable. Kinahan was remanded into custody and will appear in court again on December 21. Following the hearing, he spoke briefly with his solicitor. Presiding judges were Ms Justice Caroline Biggs, Her Hon Judge Sarah Berkeley and Judge Kevin Staunton.
