Legend Storer, a 20-year-old champion swimmer, has been charged with second-degree murder after allegedly beating a security guard to death with a water bottle at a beachfront resort in Maui, Hawaii.
Storer, a student-athlete at Concordia University Irvine, was arrested naked hours after the incident. The victim, 63-year-old Michael Dyer, was found unresponsive at the Sands of Kahana resort and pronounced dead at the scene.
Incident Details
CCTV footage from August 7 shows the naked Storer approaching Dyer at around 1:45 am. Locals reported hearing screaming and commotion that night. A resident, Gina Lombardi, told Hawaii News Now: "I heard a man screaming like Jesus stuff. Jesus loves you. Jesus is me. I am Jesus.' Really crazy and over and over and over. He probably screamed it like 15 times."
Police arrested Storer after reports of a naked man wandering in a nearby neighborhood about two hours later. He had abrasions and was taken to a hospital. Officers later connected him to Dyer's death after reviewing resort security footage.
Victim Remembered
Dyer's co-worker Bell Hill described him as a "great person." Hill stated: "He was a great person and he was just in his office having a cheeseburger on his lunch break. And he had a wife that’s a waitress at Leilani’s. It’s horrible."
Legal Proceedings
Storer faces charges of second-degree murder, burglary with a dangerous instrument, and indecent exposure, according to court documents. He pleaded not guilty on Friday and was denied bail. He is held at the Maui Community Correctional Center.
District Court Judge Christopher Dunn said: "At this time, I can’t think of any combination of conditions that would reasonably ensure the appearance of the defendant or ensure the safety of the community."
Hawaii News Now reports Storer may face harsher penalties under legislation enacted in 2021, which increases sentences for crimes against kupuna—seniors aged 60 or older.
