Salis Hanrahan, a 20-year-old British traveller from Essex, was shot dead in Philadelphia while working on a construction project. US officials have identified him as a member of 'The Traveling Conman Fraud Group', an organised crime gang designated by the FBI.
Shooting Incident Details
On July 16, 2026, Hanrahan was part of a construction team working on the home of retired firefighter George Barr, 75, in Philadelphia. At around 2pm, a shot was fired from inside the house. Hanrahan sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, managed to exit the home, and collapsed on the sidewalk, where he later died.
Philadelphia police captain James Kimrey stated: 'They heard arguments or some kind of commotion inside and then they found the boss outside.' Barr, a retired firefighter and Vietnam veteran who ran an unofficial neighbourhood watch, was charged with murder, possession of an instrument of crime, and recklessly endangering another person.
Organised Crime Group Involvement
Officials believe Hanrahan was working illegally in the US and was affiliated with 'The Traveling Conman Fraud Group', which the FBI has designated as an organised crime gang. The group is reportedly composed of Irish and British scammers who overcharge victims for building work that is never completed. Investigators have not confirmed whether Hanrahan specifically targeted Barr.
A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security told MailOnline: 'Salis Hanrahan was an illegal alien from the United Kingdom. He entered the country illegally on an unknown date and location and was denied Electronic System for Travel Authorization as he was determined to have affiliation with "The Traveling Conman Fraud Group", a transnational criminal organization.'
Victim's Background and Aftermath
Hanrahan is survived by his wife Roseann and their one-year-old daughter. Roseann shared an image on social media, writing: 'My beautiful husband I love you so much.'
Neighbour Erin Kelly expressed shock to NBC Philadelphia: 'He's always friendly. Every time I've encountered him. It's just crazy that it happened here. It's always quiet here, so for something to happen like this, it just shocked us all.'
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Barr remains in custody on murder charges.
