Melbourne Teenager Faces 52 Charges in Alleged Antisemitic Crime Spree

Victoria Police have charged a 13-year-old girl from the Bayside area with a staggering 52 offences following a series of alleged antisemitic attacks and dangerous driving incidents across Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs last week. The charges include reckless conduct endangering serious injury, multiple counts of theft and theft of motor vehicle, burglary, handling stolen goods, and threatening physical harm or property damage on the ground of a protected attribute.

Alleged Antisemitic Incidents Targeting Jewish Community

According to police statements released on Tuesday, the girl and two other teenagers were allegedly seen driving a stolen black Hyundai sedan through the suburbs of Hampton, Ripponlea, and Caulfield over multiple days. Police allege that on March 25th, the group shouted "offensive, antisemitic remarks" and threw eggs at pedestrians in what appears to be targeted harassment.

The situation escalated dramatically three days later when, around 7 PM on March 28th, the 13-year-old allegedly swerved the stolen vehicle toward Jewish families crossing the road at the intersection of Hotham Street and Glen Eira Road in Ripponlea. Police stated the families "narrowly escaped being struck by the car" in what could have resulted in catastrophic injuries. The vehicle, reportedly stolen from a gym in Caulfield, fled the scene immediately after the incident.

Broader Pattern of Erratic Driving and Violence

Investigators revealed that the 13-year-old driver was allegedly involved in several other incidents involving erratic driving in stolen cars beyond the antisemitic attacks. This broader pattern of criminal behavior emerged through additional police reports from the same period:

  • On Monday night, police responded to an alleged hit-and-run in Brighton where a male cyclist was targeted. A stolen silver SUV allegedly attempted to hit the bicycle with its passenger door before crashing into the rear of the bike. The 45-year-old Brighton cyclist sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized.
  • Just after midnight on Tuesday morning, teenagers in a stolen white Volkswagen Golf allegedly rammed an e-scooter carrying two people in Elwood. Both riders fell from the scooter as it crashed into a parked vehicle, though they did not require medical attention. When one victim and a passerby began filming the offending vehicle, one teenager allegedly threatened them.

Police later spotted the van involved in the Elwood incident and pursued it across multiple major roadways including the Nepean Highway, Dingley Bypass, EastLink, Princes Highway, and Monash Freeway. The pursuit ended when police successfully deployed stop sticks on Dandenong Road in East Malvern, bringing the vehicle to a stop on Waverley Road.

Arrests and Court Proceedings

Three female occupants were arrested at the scene and taken into custody. The 13-year-old from Bayside was remanded to appear at a children's court following her extensive list of charges. Two other girls—another 13-year-old and a 16-year-old, both from the Cardinia area—were charged with theft of motor vehicle and handling stolen goods. They were bailed to appear at a children's court at a later date.

Victoria Police emphasized that "there is absolutely no place at all in our society for hate-based behaviour" and that such activity would not be tolerated. Investigations into the series of incidents remain ongoing as authorities work to understand the full scope of the alleged crimes.

The case highlights growing concerns about teenage involvement in serious criminal activities and targeted hate crimes within Australian communities. The combination of antisemitic harassment, dangerous driving, vehicle thefts, and violent incidents represents a particularly alarming pattern that authorities are working to address through both law enforcement and community engagement initiatives.
